Privacy Policy

This policy explains the information we handle when you use Northline Journal, the choices available to you, and how to exercise your privacy rights.

1. Scope and who we are

This Privacy Policy describes how Northline Journal ("Northline," "we," "us," or "our") handles personal information when you visit northlinejournal.online, read our articles, subscribe to a publication, communicate with us, or otherwise use services that link to this policy. Northline Journal is the operator of the site and, where applicable, the controller of the personal information described here.

This policy does not govern third-party websites, services, or advertisements reached through links on our site. Those parties apply their own privacy policies.

2. Information we collect

Information you provide

  • Contact information. Your name, email address, and the contents of a message when you contact the newsroom, request a correction, inquire about advertising, or exercise a privacy right.
  • Subscription information. Your email address and subscription preferences if you sign up for a newsletter or similar service.
  • Other information you choose to submit. For example, documents or details included with a news tip. Please do not send sensitive personal information unless it is necessary for your communication.

Information collected automatically

When you use the site, we and our service providers may collect internet or other electronic activity information, including your IP address, browser and device type, operating system, approximate location derived from IP address, referring and exit pages, pages viewed, links or advertisements interacted with, timestamps, diagnostic data, and cookie or similar identifiers. We may also create aggregated or de-identified statistics from this information.

Sources of information

We collect information directly from you, automatically from your browser or device, and from vendors that support hosting, security, analytics, communications, and advertising. Advertising partners may also provide campaign and audience measurement information.

3. How and why we use information

We may use personal information to:

  • provide, maintain, troubleshoot, and secure the site;
  • deliver requested publications and manage subscription preferences;
  • respond to messages, tips, corrections, advertising inquiries, and rights requests;
  • understand readership, improve content and site performance, and develop services;
  • select, deliver, limit the frequency of, and measure advertising;
  • detect fraud, abuse, security incidents, and invalid advertising traffic;
  • comply with law, enforce our terms, and protect rights, safety, and property; and
  • carry out another purpose disclosed to you when information is collected.

Where a legal basis is required, we process information with your consent, to perform a contract or take steps you request, to comply with legal obligations, or for legitimate interests such as operating, securing, and improving the site, balanced against your rights. You may withdraw consent at any time as described below; withdrawal does not affect processing that was lawful before withdrawal.

4. Cookies and consent

Cookies are small files stored by a browser. We may also use local storage, pixels, tags, and similar technologies. Essential technologies support functions such as security, network management, and remembering privacy choices. Non-essential technologies may be used for analytics, advertising, audience measurement, and personalization.

Our consent banner offers "Accept all" and "Reject non-essential" choices and stores the selection in your browser's local storage under the key nl-consent-v1. The stored selection is a first-party consent signal. Whether it controls a particular analytics or advertising tag depends on the site's deployment configuration; the operator must ensure those integrations honor the signal wherever applicable law requires consent. Selecting "Reject non-essential" does not prevent access to editorial content.

You can withdraw or change a stored choice by clearing Northline Journal's cookies and site data in your browser and reloading the site, then making a new selection. You can also block or delete cookies with browser controls. Blocking some essential storage may affect site operation, and clearing storage may cause the banner to appear again.

5. Advertising and third-party ad partners

Northline Journal uses Google AdSense and may work with other advertising partners to display contextual or personalized advertising, manage campaigns, prevent fraud, cap ad frequency, and measure performance. Google and other partners may use cookies, pixels, IP addresses, device or browser information, activity on this site, and information they receive from other services, subject to deployment and partner settings, applicable law, and their own privacy policies.

Ad partners may act as independent controllers for some processing. The sellers authorized to sell our advertising inventory may be listed in our ads.txtfile, although that file is not a complete list of every company that processes data. We do not provide the content of private messages or newsroom tips to advertisers for their own marketing.

We do not sell personal information for money. However, some privacy laws define "sale," "sharing," or "targeted advertising" broadly enough to include disclosures made for cross-context behavioral advertising. Where those laws apply, you may request an opt-out by contacting us and using available browser, device, or advertising-partner controls. Selecting "Reject non-essential" records your preference on this site; the deployment must be configured so relevant integrations honor it. We will not discriminate against you for exercising a privacy right.

6. Analytics

We may use analytics providers to learn how visitors find and use the site, which pages perform well, and whether the site functions correctly. Analytics data may include the device, browser, approximate location, referral source, page views, interactions, and identifiers described above. Where required, the deployment must be configured so non-essential analytics operate only with an appropriate consent signal or other lawful basis. We may use aggregated or de-identified analytics that do not reasonably identify an individual.

7. How we share information

We may disclose personal information to:

  • Service providers. Vendors supporting hosting, content delivery, security, email, customer support, and other operations, subject to appropriate terms.
  • Analytics and advertising partners. As described above, subject to applicable choices and privacy rights.
  • Authorities and other parties for legal or safety reasons. When we reasonably believe disclosure is required by law or necessary to protect rights, safety, property, users, or the public.
  • Transaction participants. In connection with a financing, merger, acquisition, reorganization, sale of assets, or similar transaction, subject to law.
  • Other recipients at your direction. When you ask us to disclose information or otherwise consent to a disclosure.

8. International transfers

We and our providers may process information in the United States and other countries whose privacy laws may differ from those where you live. When required, we use recognized safeguards for international transfers, such as adequacy decisions, contractual protections, or the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. You may contact us for more information about applicable safeguards.

9. Data retention

We retain personal information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes in this policy, including to provide services, maintain security and business records, resolve disputes, and meet legal obligations. Retention depends on the type and sensitivity of the information, the reason it was collected, and applicable law. For example, newsletter information is generally kept until you unsubscribe, correspondence as long as needed to address it and maintain appropriate records, and operational logs for a limited period appropriate to security and diagnostics. A consent choice remains in local storage until it is replaced or you clear site data. Backups may retain information for an additional limited period before deletion or de-identification.

10. Your privacy rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access to or a copy of your personal information; correction; deletion; restriction of processing; data portability; or information about collection, use, disclosure, and recipients. You may also object to certain processing, withdraw consent, opt out of targeted advertising or the sale or sharing of personal information, and appeal a denied request where the law provides that right.

Residents of the European Economic Area or United Kingdom may complain to their local data protection authority. California residents may request the categories and specific pieces of personal information collected, the categories of sources and recipients, correction or deletion, and opt out of sale or sharing. We do not knowingly use or disclose sensitive personal information for purposes that trigger a right to limit under California law.

To exercise a right, email contact@northlinejournal.com and describe your request and jurisdiction. We may need to verify your identity and authority before responding. An authorized agent may submit a request where permitted by law, but we may ask for proof of authorization. We will respond within the period required by applicable law and will not discriminate against you for making a request.

11. Children's data

The site is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Where a higher age threshold or affirmative authorization applies, we do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of minors without the required authorization. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us so we can investigate and delete it as appropriate.

12. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect personal information. No internet transmission, system, or storage method is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. Take care when deciding what information to send by ordinary email or through a news tip.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as our practices, services, or legal obligations change. We will post the revised policy here and change the "Last updated" date. If a change is material, we will provide additional notice or request consent when required by law.
